[Dr. Susan Taylor's RX for Brown Skin]
The RX for Brown Skin Philosophy:

Brown skin is special and requires a customized care solution.

Brown skin comes in many colors:

Women with brown skin, whether we are from North, South, or Latin America, (New York, Los Angeles, Brazil or Mexico) Caribbean or Pacific Islands (Puerto Rico, Jamaica, Guam, Samoa or Tonga) South Asia (India, Pakistan, Indonesia or the Philippines) Africa (Egypt, Morocco, Senegal or Cape Town)

We all share similar skin concerns.

Brown skin has unique properties:
  • Brown skin is sensitive, easily irritated and susceptible to developing uneven skin tones and discolorations. Many ingredients in mainstream skincare products can exacerbate this condition.
  • Brown skin requires products that are formulated specifically for its unique characteristics (the “one size fits all” theory is not appropriate)
  • Brown skin is ever evolving, that is, it changes from day to day and from season to season depending upon environmental factors such as the heat, humidity, wind, and cold. Internal factors such as diet, stress, menstrual cycle or illness may also have a profound effect upon brown skin.
Therefore, Brown skin needs a customized solution:

The Rx for Brownskin Difference

Free of Common Skin Irritants:

Brown skin becomes easily irritated and dry in reaction to many skin care products. Signs of sensitivity to a product include irritation, dryness, itching, burning, bumpiness, redness or darkness that develop after product use. Ingredients such as fragrances, dyes, propylene glycol, lanolin, alcohol, and other chemicals are all potential brown skin enemies that may lead to pigmentation problems or the development of dark marks. Rx for Brown skin regimens are free of ingredients that potentially harm brown skin: fragrance-free, propylene-glycol free, lanolin-free, alcohol-free, and dye-free.

Cleansing Brown Skin

Brown Skin comes clean with the following simple steps:

  • Twice daily cleansing to remove dirt, excess oil, perspiration, make-up and environmental pollutants is a brown skin must.
  • The best tool for cleansing facial skin is your fingertips, steer clear of puffs, loofah sponges or rough washcloths.
  • Do not overcleanse – cleansing the face too often or too roughly will only irritate brown skin.
  • Select your cleansing product based upon what your skin tells you.

Cleansing Toning Brown Skin

To tone or not to tone Brown Skin:

  • The purpose of a skin toner is to remove residual surface oil (sebum), make-up, environmental pollutants and dirt that remains after washing.
  • Toners can minimize shine and invigorate skin.
  • A new generation of properly formulated toners add an important layer of beneficial ingredients to the skin such as antioxidants, complexion eveners, exfoliants or acne fighters.
  • Apply one layer of toner to your skin with a fluffy cotton ball, observe your skin and based upon what it tells you, you may apply another layer to persistently oily area, to areas of stubborn make-up residue or to areas in need of particular ingredients (such as glycolic acid for exfoliation or sulfur for acne). Alternatively, you may decide not to apply a toner your skin on a particular day.

Hydrating Brown Skin

Why it is wise to hydrate Brown Skin:

  • Humectant moisturizers work by attracting moisture into the skin. Humectants such as hyaluronic acid (that has the unique property of binding water up to 1,000 times its weight) coupled with glycerin completely hydrate sensitive brown skin.
  • Occlusive moisturizers trap and seal moisture into brown skin and provide a barrier between your skin and the potentially harmful environment.
  • Moisturizers bathe your skin all day and night and should contain ingredients that are beneficial to brown skin like soy, and pomagrante.
  • Moisturizers should be non-greasy and leave the skin feeling smooth, silky and soft.

Exfoliate Brown Skin

Gentle exfoliation is essential for Brown Skin:

  • Exfoliation simply means “to cast off or to remove the surface of…” It is important to remove the surface layer of dead, dry and dull skin to uncover your flawless brown skin.
  • Your skin exfoliates or shed dead skin cells from the surface naturally each day, even while you’re sleeping. But the process may not be complete because skin cells sometimes stick together and remain on the face leaving a dull, dry, lifeless appearance.
  • Exfoliation of brown skin should never be done with harsh, rough abrasives or high concentrations of chemical exfoliants since they can irritate the skin and trigger new pigmentation problems.
  • Exfoliation of brown skin should never be done with harsh, rough abrasives or high concentrations of chemical exfoliants since they can irritate the skin and trigger new pigmentation problems.
  • Incorporate one or all four steps of exfoliation with the Bright and Even Collection for your daily exfoliation.
